What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process utilized for both functional (protective) and decorative finishing of various substrates. Powder coating provides many advantages, including durability, environmental friendliness, and a wide range of color and texture options. It is a preferred choice for industries ranging from automotive and aerospace to furniture and appliances due to its superior finish quality and longevity. Here’s an overview of how it works:

Electrostatic Spray Deposition (ESD): Powder coating is applied using an electrostatic charged spray gun, which evenly distributes the powder onto a grounded substrate. This electrostatic attraction ensures uniform coverage and adhesion of the powder.

Curing Process: After the powder is applied, the coated parts are moved into a high temperature industrial cure oven. The heat causes the powder to chemically react, forming a durable and smooth finish.

Versatility: Powder coatings are not limited to metal substrates; they can also be applied to non-metallic surfaces such as plastics and medium density fiberboard (MDF), offering versatility in finishing options.

Fluidized Bed Process: In addition to electrostatic spray deposition, powder coating can be applied via a fluidized bed process. Parts are preheated and then dipped into a hopper of fluidizing powder, where the powder flows onto the part, creating a thick and even coating.

State-of-the-Art Equipment: Our facility features the latest automated powder line application system equipped with a corona discharge system. This technology allows us to apply a wide range of polymer powders efficiently and precisely.

Superior Pretreatment: We have developed specially designed multi-metal pretreatment chemical processes using iron phosphates and non-chrome polymer sealing technologies. These processes guarantee superior performance and durability for your coated parts.

Customized Coating Options: Surtech Industries offers a variety of powder formulations, including polyesters, epoxies, TGIC, hybrids, and nylons. These coatings are tailored to meet a wide range of applications, surface textures, gloss levels, and aesthetic finish requirements.

Size and Weight Capabilities: Our powder coating capabilities extend to parts within an operating window of 36 inches wide by 60 inches high by 240 inches long. Each part should not exceed 150 pounds per hook, with hook centers set at 24 inches.

A Brief History of Powder Coating Technology

Powder coating technology has a rich history, rooted in innovation and driven by environmental concerns. Here’s a glimpse into its evolution:

Developed in Europe by Dr. Erwin Gemmer in response to environmental pressures, powder coating technology emerged as an alternative to traditional liquid coatings. Dr. Gemmer, a German scientist, pioneered the fluidized bed application method, which revolutionized the coating industry.

Between 1958 and 1965, virtually all powder coatings were applied using the fluidized bed process. This method involved preheating parts and then immersing them into a hopper of fluidizing powder, where the powder would adhere to the heated surface, forming a coating.

Powder coating made its way to North America in the 1960s, marking the beginning of its widespread adoption in industrial finishing processes. Over the years, advancements in application techniques and formulations have further enhanced the capabilities and popularity of powder coatings.

Today, powder coating represents more than 15% of the total industrial finishing market in the United States alone, a testament to its effectiveness, versatility, and environmental advantages.
